South Shore Mental Health
I am the girl half of Karson and Kennedy in the Morning on Mix 104.1 here in Boston. We spend our mornings bring laughs to people stuck in traffic, doling out bad advice to the lovelorn and making fun of one another. I live with mental illness having been diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder, depression and bi-polar disorder. I am trying to bring awareness to mental illness and stop the stigmas associated with it.

South Shore Mental works to provide education, treatment and recovery programs to people with mental illness and children with developmental delays or disabilities. Our fundraising efforts primarily focus on expanding our programs ; and a specific fund to provide assistance to clients for basic needs including food, shelter and clothing. Oftentimes, lack of food, shelter and clothing creates a barrier to recovery as clients are unable to focus on their necessary treatment as they are in need of basic necessities.
To put not too fine a point on it…money.
They have recently started a restricted Basic Needs Fund which provides grants of up to $500 to clients to assist with purchases of clothing, food and down payments for permanent housing. These grants have been life-changing for over 50 clients as they are provided with essentials that allow them to focus on their recovery instead of hunger, basic clothing or places to live. This fund has provided our clinicians with an amazing tool to assist clients in their therapy and life-planning.
The funds for our Basic Needs Fund are overseen by the Director of Marketing and Development at South Shore Mental Health. Clinicians and Department Managers request funds through a written explanation of the situation. Requests must be for a basic need and integrated into the client’s treatment plan. If approved, payment is made to the vendor or gift cards are purchased to the store where the client can purchase clothing or food. Clients do not receive a cash payments.
